Hello again from the Destination Builder team. All the hard work in preparation for Indaba 2008 is now over and the post-Indaba follow-up work is underway extending this busy time for everyone. We trust that this has been a successful time for those of you who attended (and also those who didn’t) as well as enjoying the opportunity to catch up with old friends and acquaintances… and hopefully making some new ones. Indaba for the Builder “posse” was a demanding combination … both hectic and fun. It was a pleasure to meet with everybody that we did and we look forward to meeting more of you in the not too distant future. Issue 03: May 2008 |

Desktops have always been faster, better and cheaper and were therefore only really considered when mobility was an issue. With load shedding in our midst my opinion is that the desktop argument is no longer that strong anymore. If you consider that you now have to add R800 onto a PC for a UPS (and probably 2/3 over the life of the PC) then the financial argument all but disappears. Laptops are not affected by 2/3 hour power outages so you have very little loss in productivity. In addition, as laptops are fitted with wireless, having to have meetings within reach of a desktop pc become irrelevant. If you are considering laptops then I would refrain from buying bottom end laptops at this stage. These are still fitted with "pre" Dual Core chips which means that they will be struggling with any modern software... for the non techie's this means that they are too old and you will be wasting you money. You can get these for around R5000 Inc VAT. A Dual Core will set you back about R7500. If you can afford it then get a Core 2 Duo.... better & faster at around R8000-00 Inc VAT. If you still feel that it is better to stick with a PC then please take note that a UPS is only really there to give you time to save your work & power down. They are not made to run for any period of time. You will damage the battery & find yourself in the continuous loop of forking out R800 every so often. That's it for me.
